UCOS is a comprehensive control system platform for companies that demand more from their control system, such as:

  • Industry-standard as well as specialized redundancy options
  • Systematic enforcement of corporate control standards
  • Reduced impact of hardware and software obsolescence
  • Support for SCADA, DCS, PLC/HMI, and mixed architectures
  • Support for equipment from many manufacturers
  • Significantly reduced system maintenance
  • Robust features that deliver ultra-reliable control in extreme environments

… as well as all the functionality you expect in a comprehensive, fully integrated control system platform.

More companies are turning to UCOS to address their control system challenges. Here are just some of the reasons.

A Comprehensive, Integrated Platform
  • Complete development environment
  • Rich, full-color, hi-res operator HMI
  • Alarming and logging
  • Historical and real-time trending
  • Zero-configuration faceplates
  • Multi-layered, role-based security
  • Data server and comms gateway
  • Process historical archiver
  • Regulatory and sequential control
  • Device and network diagnostics
  • API & third-party connectivity options

Specialized Redundancy Options

Just about everything in a UCOS system can be configured to be redundant – from operator workstations to controllers down to individual points.

Of course, many control systems support failover redundancy. But UCOS supports the ability for the failover system to fail over to another level of backup, and that backup can failover, too. For many critical processes, one level of redundancy is not enough, so UCOS provides multiple levels.

In some architectures, redundancy requires special hardware, custom programming, and failover is limited to the local area network. In UCOS, setting up redundancy is a matter of configuring a few parameters and the backups, which can be located remotely – regardless of the architecture.

Enforced Control Standards

Templates allow you to encapsulate functionality in objects that can be used over and over again to save time, enforce control standards, and ensure repeatable success.

Compared to other control systems, UCOS allows you to encapsulate more functionality into each template. That allows you to specify exactly how your control systems are supposed to be designed, built, and operated.

Then UCOS systematically enforces those standards throughout all your current and future control system projects.

Reduced System Maintenance

Imagine your control system uses 500,000 points. That’s 500,000 point definitions and hundreds of thousands of inter-connections to other points, graphic objects, and controllers. When you have to change one of them, it creates a ripple effect that may require you to make hundreds or thousands of related changes.

In UCOS, those 500,000 points can be encapsulated in as few as 50 templates. Maintaining 500,000 points in fifty templates insulates you from the tedious work that is required to maintain each point individually. We know because we have customers who are doing it and who are saving a lot of time and money on maintenance as a result.

Making Obsolescence Obsolete

Of course, UCOS cannot eliminate the need to replace equipment and systems from time to time. But since UCOS is not tied to proprietary hardware, it offers ways to address obsolescence that are not available to control systems that are dependent on a specific brand of equipment.

For example, upgrading a typical PLC/HMI control system often requires upgrading both the HMI, software, and the controller’s firmware – or even replacing the controller. In a UCOS system, upgrading one does not require you to upgrade the other. Moreover, when it’s time to replace obsolete I/O modules, UCOS allows you to select from dozens of available and supported families of equipment without requiring a wholesale re-engineering of the logic, as many other control systems require when switching I/O makes or models.

The unique design of UCOS and its ongoing support of third-party equipment make it possible to address obsolescence planning as needed using the latest technology available at the time.

Flexible Architectures

UCOS can be configured to support traditional SCADA, DCS, or PLC/HMI architectures. But many industries need support for multiple, complex, interdependent processes – in a single system. UCOS is uniquely designed to handle the challenges faced by such demanding processes. With UCOS, you are not limited to a single architecture, nor are you required to use multiple control systems. UCOS supports mixed architectures with ease.

Features for Extreme Environments

UCOS includes specialized functionality required to ensure reliable operations in extreme, harsh, and access-limited environments, such as the desert, the arctic tundra, and the ocean.

This specialized functionality maximizes control system availability, supports remote monitoring and maintenance, and includes proactive features that focus on preventing problems – not just fixing them.

UCOS was designed to control standard industrial processes, as well as sophisticated processes that must hold up under the worst conditions on earth.
